Competency 6: Research

INFO 5223: Metadata Research Presentation, Summer 2022
For this presentation, I was assigned to research and describe the concept of automatic generation of metadata.

This is a well known topic within the information sciences and has been a topic of discussion as early as the 1950's. We are developing and testing new methods of automated metadata generation constantly as we gain a greater understanding of how it can be implemented to improve how we organize and retrieve information. Through this project I became familiar with key figures and problems associated with this concept, illustrating my understanding of ALA Competency 6B, " the central research findings and research literature of the field".

INFO 5200: Concept Briefing, Spring 2022
For this project I was assigned to research and present a current state of the topic of Natural Language Processing (NLP).

Competency 6B requires that the individual be familiar with "(t)he central research findings and research literature of the field". NLP is a major concept within the field of information science, and this report allowed me to become familiar with older and more recent research. I consulted research from a range of resources on natural language processing and provided a definition of the topic. Following this, I used scholarly research to outline the purpose and implications of NLP in which I highlighted the relationship between NLP and controlled vocabulary as well as the benefits and potential problems with this type of processing. I had to provide several examples of NLP as well as a general conclusion of the topic. The process of researching this topic familiarized me not only with a specific topic that is relevant to the discipline, but also many research resources and names of scholars who are active in the field.
