Competency 3: Organization of Recorded Knowledge and Information

INFO 5200: Information Organization Project, Spring 2022
This project involved the creation of a database through Libib for a hypothetical collection of books, accompanied by a reflection and discussion of its creation and implementation.

Competency 3B states that the individual should understand "(t)he developmental, descriptive, and evaluative skills needed to organize recorded knowledge and information resources" as well as 3C, "(t)he systems of cataloging, metadata, indexing, and classification standards and methods used to organize recorded knowledge and information". This project reflects these qualities by requiring a clear understanding of the methods and standards of classification that are common in the discipline. In the database that was created, each record had to be created based on metadata collected and determined appropriate based on the objects represented within it. Before beginning to collect and record metadata for the database, the project required that an ideal version of the database be considered. After this, records were then created for the database followed by an analysis on the experience of using the database. Libib, the program used to execute the project, proved to have certain limitations that could not be foreseen. Because of this, certain elements had to be reworked or adjusted in order to fit into the prescribed fields. For example, many elements such as Subject and Format had to be included together under the "tags" field in Libib. This helped to me understand and implement different standards for organizing information from scratch with an entire collection to see what works and what is feasible and what is not, as would reflect any real world scenario where resources are limited.

INFO 5330: Information Organization Project, Spring 2022
For this project, I created and recorded an information session that could be given to students as part of an academic library session on how to do research for an art history essay.

Competency 3A, requires the individual to understand "(t)he principles involved in the organization and representation of recorded knowledge and information. 3B indicates the individual understands "(t)he developmental, descriptive, and evaluative skills needed to organize recorded knowledge and information resources". For this project, I had to create an online video information session, much like what many academic librarians are required to do to support student course-work. In order to organize and break down the information in a teachable manner, I had to understand how to use resources such as online databases as well as determine how to search more efficiently. In order to organize this presentation, I had to evaluate resources and explain how to do so at the level of a student who may or may not be familiar with resources such as the UNT online catalogue or EBSCO. As this project was for an assignment based on similar existing assignments in the field of art history, I had to determine which resources would be best suited for the particular assignment and skill level of users also.
