ALA Core Competencies
This section provides evidence supporting my understanding of each of the eight core competencies of librarianship, as outlined by the American Library Association (ALA). The ALA is the largest and oldest library association in the world. As an ALA-accredited institution, the University of North Texas has provided opportunities in my coursework to become familiar with and be able to demonstrate my knowledge of these core areas. Each page contains two examples of work I have completed in my time at the university, as well as a short description which details how it demonstrates my mastery of the concept. It is important for library professionals to be familiar with and utilize ideas from these core concepts in order to adhere to professional standards.
The ALA Core Competencies:
1. Foundations of the Profession
2. Information Resources
3. Organization of Recorded Knowledge and Information
4. Technological Knowledge and Skills
5. Reference and User Services
6. Research
7. Continuing Education and Lifelong Learning
8. Administration and Management
