Competency 4: Technological Knowledge & Skills
INFO 5841: Final Project, Spring 2022
The information science profession is heavily influenced by changes and developments in technology. For this essay, I was asked to research a topic related to digital curation and complete an essay discussing it.
I chose to research the concept of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) in the context of cultural heritage institutions. In my research, I discovered ways in which these new technologies have aided in conserving cultural heritage assets, as well as some of the weaknesses and areas of improvement that may be needed before they will be more effective at doing so. Through this, I demonstrate my understanding of "information, communication, assistive, and related technologies as they affect the resources, service delivery, and uses of libraries and other information agencies" as described in ALA Competency 4A. This research project also demonstrates my ability to recognize "emerging
technologies and innovations" within the profession as outlined in Competency 4D.
INFO 5223: Group Metadata Presentation, Summer 2022
For this project, I worked with two classmates to create and present complete metadata records in Extensible Markup Language (XML) for two different collections of objects.
With my classmates, I determined relevant metadata from several digital objects and created an XML record for them while utilizing Dublin Core standards. XML is a standard format for communicating data on the internet. As information institutions rely more and more on web-based applications for storing and transmitting information, this knowledge becomes more necessary. In compiling these XML records, I demonstrate an understanding of "information, communication, assistive, and related technologies as they affect the
resources, service delivery, and uses of libraries and other information agencies" as described by Competency 4A.
